COP2 Context & Brief

Context:

There are many types of hunting, all of which have some effect on the natural world. Although many of these do cause great controversy regarding their ethics and sustainability and do have negative effects on the natural world, there is still a lot of positive things to be learned from hunting. Hunting provides us with a window into the natural world and an opportunity to learn from it. This can allow us to create a mutually beneficial relationship between humans and the natural world. However, these positive and more primitive aspects s of hunting are scarcely talked about. Mainstream media instead pays close attention to the most controversial and negative aspects, creating a biased public perception of what hunting is, and more importantly, can be.

Brief:

Create a piece of work that highlights the key aspects of the hunting essay. The piece should encourage a wider audience to explore this topic by presenting the work in a more digestible and entertaining format than a standard essay structure.

The Event

During the event, a handful of students took to the surrounding area wearing the sandwich boards and giving out flyers.

As the event happened, we were able to give live updates on our Instagram page. For example, the photo opportunity in the front window allowed us to engage with the visitors in this way and also gave another opportunity for them to find our Instagram page.

The Sign

After solidifying the fine logo design we the went on to create a sign to go on the outside of the event. Using the laser cutter we made a large MDF version of the logo for this.

After the sign was cut and assembled we realised that it was actually fairly difficult to read due to the negative space. To over come this we opted to spray the whole thing black and then use foam white bored to back the whole thing. This contrast in color improved the legibility greatly.

We also found that we had a lot of spare parts left over from where the letters had been cut. Making use of these we were able to create a couple of other signs to be put up at the exhibition.

Marketing Work

To help market the event in the run up and when it was on, an Instagram, Facebook page and event was set up. These maintained our branding for the event by using the logo and terminology etc. By offering general information about the event, sneak previews of students work and updates on the space coming together, these social networking pages enabled us to build up some hype running up to the event and allowed us to invite friends and relatives. Using consistent hashtags also aided this as well as spreading the word further by linking to tags such as Bradford and LCA.

Whilst me, Jan and Karli were developing the logo, E-flyers and the sign, the rest of our group were also busy creating flyers and sandwich boards to help promote the event over the next week or so and, more specifically, on the weekend of the event. We decided previously as a group that the majority of our visitors will be passers by. Taking advantage of the busy streets filled with people doing Xmas shopping, we wanted to be able to persuade people to come into the space by handing out flyers and using the sandwich boards outside the event and in the surrounding area when the event was actually on. The flyers were also put up outside the space and in shop windows, on lamppost etc in the surrounding area.

We had also discussed as a group of the potential of contacting local news platforms in order to further promote the event. Poppy got in touch with a local daily newspaper, ‘The Telegraph & Argus’ and arranged for a photographer and reporter to come out to the space during the days students were there preparing it for the event. An article was the publish along with Yves help doing the write up as to make sure all the correct information was supplied.

Task 2 – Planning and initial ideas

After each group had pitched and a concept was chosen we were the split of into different groups with specified job roles. I was part of the Marketing team.

At our first group meeting it was evident that we needed to come up with the branding – logo, colour scheme, terminology etc – ASAP so that we could begin to create things and advertise the event. Working with the event name GROTTO, we also decided that the tag line should be ‘A winter adventure’ as this still related to the time of year but didn’t restrict the event to being festive. ‘Adventure’ also conveys the idea of the event being an experience. These were the initial ideas for the logo made at this meeting:

We also decide that it would be good to have posters in the window of the space installed immediately to advertise the event. We brainstormed ideas for these posters at this meeting and came up with the poster shown below. We wanted to have a poster that represented something being revealed (such as the opening of the event) and that also had emphasis on diversity and variety to attract a wider audience.

At this meeting we also started to create a plan for the next weeks running up to the event. We split the group into two, my half working more on the branding side of things such as the logo, E-flyers etc and the other half working on advertising the event through a social media presence, news paper articles etc. From this, we began creating hashtags and various social media pages to be used in conjunction with the event.
